21 Best French Door Refrigerators of 2018

I was recently researching a kitchen article and found myself wondering: Which are the best French door refrigerators? It’s almost unbelievable how many fridges there are on the market, and in such a variety of styles. What makes French door refrigerators different is they have two doors on top (the fridge part), and a drawer below (the freezer). Some have an additional crisper drawer in between. They’re very pretty… They can also be very pricey! And sorting through the many reviews out there can be confusing.

[Editor’s note: This was last updated on May 30, 2018]

Since I can’t stand thinking of readers making an investment into something that looks great, but isn’t built to last, I decided to write this ultimate guide by researching thousands of ratings and reviews. Because we all know that pricey and long-lasting aren’t necessarily the same thing. (Also read my post, Appliance Brands and Models: How to Choose.)

My goal was to find out which are the absolute best French door fridges.

To do this I:

  1. analyzed all the reviews of French door refrigerators on a handful of well-established editorial websites (I picked websites that actually test fridges)
  2. filtered out all the customer ratings of French door fridges on the Home Depot website, based on strict criteria
  3. checked which of my results were also ENERGY STAR rated for maximum efficiency.

Then I put all the results together and outlined them for you below.

Here’s my methodology for choosing the absolute best French door refrigerators:

1. I started by narrowing my research to include only French door refrigerators.

2. I scoured editorial reviews on four websites that published their most recent roundup reviews of French door fridges. These reviews were based on actually testing fridges. These websites include:

  • CNET, “Best refrigerators 2017”
  • Reviews.com, “The Best Refrigerator”
  • TopTenReviews.com, “The Best French Door Refrigerators”
  • Good Housekeeping Institute, “Refrigerators Reviews”

I only included fridges that got top ratings from editors. In the case of a five-star rating system, that meant I only included fridges with 4 to 5 star ratings.

3. I looked at the U.S. government’s ENERGY STAR ratings, to find the most energy-efficient French door fridges.

4. I looked at all of the top-rated fridges in the French door category on Home Depot’s website. I buy things there all the time and I find that the appliance savings are usually the best, plus they offer free shipping on most orders over $45.

I limited my research to models that had at least 500 reviews, because I needed some way to narrow them down.

Note: You’ll find that that some fridges on my list have fewer than 500 reviews on Home Depot.com. That’s because they got top ratings on the other websites I looked at.

How to interpret my conclusions:

It goes without saying that this list should help you narrow down the vast number of French door fridges out there.

But keep in mind that at some point this becomes a subjective matter. Whether you want an ice maker in the door, or a fridge that also makes coffee — well, these things are personal, right?

My results: The 21 Best French Door Refrigerators of 2018

I’ve organized this list by brand name, in alphabetical order. Each entry includes:

  • the brand
  • model number
  • price
  • why I picked it
  • size (cubic feet and width in inches)
  • finish colors
  • and whether or not it’s ENERGY STAR rated.

I based all the prices and number of ratings on Home Depot’s website; these can change often. Please leave a comment if you have questions or feedback! I love hearing from readers.

And with no further ado, here they are, the best of the best French door refrigerators! Woohoo!

Conclusion

And that’s it! Wow! It’s a lot of information to take in and process.

My biggest piece of advice is perhaps the simplest: As you pore over the details of each model, keep in mind that what you really need, above all else, is something to keep food cold and frozen. Beyond that, it’s bells and whistles.

I wish you luck on your fridge-buying journey! Again, please leave any questions in the comments section below and I’ll answer them.

  1. I appreciate all your details, but the list is by brand and really doesn’t show a clear definitive “best in class” overall regardless of brand & since it didn’t consider repairs or reliability how is that a real evaluation? Especially since I thought I wanted LG french door after Best Buy, Sears Home Appliance Showroom & coworkers all told me Samsung has a lot of issues they prefer LG. But then review after review on many websites say compressor & evaporator issues are prevalent w/ LG, don’t get one. Also repair folks are almost refusing to work with them & their customer service is lacking or drags you along. We’ve always had Kitchen Aid but now seems like they aren’t the stars like they used to be. Hard to tell what to do, 11 yr. old Kitchen Aid ice maker quit working & considering moving to French door once & for all. Any other thoughts, i’ve been combing review sites for days when i found yours.

  2. Dear Travis,
How does one get a dependable refrigerator now days? We bought a Sears elite (LG) frefrigerator less than 3 years ago and the compressor went out and in process of the repair the fan board in upper part went out. It’s been 3 weeks without a refrigerator it get quite frustrating is that the new normal ( good thing we got an extended warranty). It should not be that way when you spend good money for it and you live on a fixed income. lets face it your refrigerator is the most important appliance one has.

  3. I’m on a search also and so glad I found your article. Thank you for all he effort put forth to give such helpful information. Just what I needed. I only have a couple suggestions. If you could have indicated in the description of each which had ice/water dispenser, it would have saved time from having to go and look at each one. Also, did you think about considering the repair records of the brands?

  4. Travis, here is my tale of refrigerator woe: Remodeled the kitchen 10 years ago, with GE Profile Appliances. After several repairs to the GE Profile refrigerator (internal leaks), we replaced it December 2015 with an LG French Door model #LFXS30766S. It quit cooling June 27, 2018 – six months after warranty expired. So, eliminating the GE Profile line & anything LG, can you suggest a reliable, Energy Star brand French Door model fridge that would last longer than 2-3 years. Replacing $2K fridges every couple of years is not only expensive, but frustrating!!

    • JoAnn, I’m going to look into repair records and see if I can cobble together any information of true value. In the meantime, I did come across this article about some class action lawsuits against LG because of their fridges having compressor failures. You may find it interesting. The main lawsuit was dismissed. But that, combined, with other research I read, makes me think that the Number 1 thing to do is get an extended warranty on a fridge compressor. That seems to be the part that can cause the biggest problems.

      • Jo Ann I feel your pain! Mine was Samsung & cost $3000 & at 2 1/2 yrs old, nothing but problems! They can’t parts for most Samsung or LG the repairman said. I want American made with parts available. I had decided on a whirlpool, which repairman says has the least repairs. The one I want everyone loves except runs extremely loud. Travis how are we going to know this??

      • I have had problems with both an LG washer and my LG refrigerator. In my opinion their products are very alluring with all the sexy bells and whistles and their quality is sorely lacking. The company was not helpful with the washer and I am not going to put money into having repairs done to the crated plastic areas of my fridge or the leaking ice make that won’t stoop making ice. Thanks for the info. I will look at it more closely. By my quick look, I was not sure if it indicated a definitive winner. I plan to look at Electrolux as well. Any opinion?

  5. I see the Whirlpool 25-cu ft. French door refrigerator with ice maker Black stainless steel finger-print resistant, energy star. Model #WRF535SWHV 4 1/2 stars didn’t make the list . Also the LG 25.4 -cu ft. French door refrigerator with ice maker. Finger-print resistant Black stainless steel, energy star. Model #LFCS25426D didn’t make your list. Very disappointed. It has 4.5 stars. If you are familiar with these two models and can give me any information before I purchase it……I would appreciate it very much!

    Thank you

    M.M

    • Hi, M.M.! Thanks for giving me that tip about the #WRF535SWHV. I just checked and it now has exactly 500 reviews! With that and 4.6 stars out of 5, that model now does make my list. So I will need to add it in. Like I said in my methodology details, I needed some way to narrow down all the models out there, so I only included ones that had at least 500 reviews or appeared on editors’ lists. The LG LFCS25426D does have 4.6 stars but only out of 240 reviews right now. So that’s why it wouldn’t make my list for now… I do update regularly, so if it reaches 500 reviews and stays above 4 stars, I will then add it.

  6. Travis- I have been researching refrigerators for weeks now and while I find your list somewhat helpful, I’m left wondering which brands scored at the top? So many of the reviews on the frig’s from your list have terrible consumer feedback. I just want a refrigerator that I can rely on like my 19 year old GE appliances! Does one even exist now? If so, I’ve yet to find one. Please let me know if you have. Exhausting process with little positive results!!

  7. Dear Travis,

My wife and I enjoyed your informative, well researched and well written article on top loading washing machines. We will soon be purchasing many appliances for our new home here in Davis. We will be visiting your excellent website often. Many thanks .
